About Us:

Picture
BREAM is non-government, not-for-profit marine science research and conservation programme supported solely by research grants and public donations.

The programme is run by Dr. Thaddeus Murdoch, Ph.D.,
a Bermudian marine scientist with over 20 years research experience. Since 2002, Dr. Murdoch and the BREAM Team of Bermudian researchers and international student interns have mapped all the reefs and marine habitats in Bermuda, and then collected baseline data from over 200 sites where they measured the condition of coral reefs, seagrass meadows and fish stocks across the island.

We coordinate conservation efforts such as coral transplantation, impact assessments and marine habitat restoration.

BREAM’s primary goal is to empower the public to understand that a healthy reef system and abundant fishes are critical to our survival here on the small island of Bermuda.

The aims of BREAM are:
  • To support multidisciplinary studies of Bermuda’s coral reef complex in order to enhance the research and management of our unique marine environment
  • To properly document and orchestrate data collection, management and sharing through the development of a GIS framework and information database, in order to promote improved local, regional and international understanding of coral reef systems.
  • To integrate the resource managers, the scientific community and the users in the management processes to define common goals and to recognize the significant pressures and conflicts that are placed upon our marine environment.
  • To promote a range of public awareness programmes, with the goal of promoting care of our unique coral reef ecosystem.
